What's a warranty http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warranty Breach of warranty occurs when the promise is broken, i.e., a product is defective or not as should be expected by a reasonable buyer.
Warranty have you ever tried to claim one, and have you notice that almost on the day it expires so does the product, you end up throwing it after wondering why and how so much work and materials goes down the drain.
Look at the goods on the shelves in the stores today, why doesn't the energy star rate scheme cover every electrical item, phone, computers, monitors, TV and toaster etc, and why not items like electric blankets, blanket, donnas, jumpers.
If we had the right clothes on would we need all the heating and air conditioning in our buildings?
So would a warranty extension to of a year or more save materials and energy? And if claiming your warranty was as easy as entering the product number into a national site which tells you how to exercise the warranty, wouldn't manufactures of crap start to improve the goods, and if the government set mandatory warranties, ever increasing warranties based on the cost of goods this would also save materials and energy.

Cars would have a 10 year warranty, and as the car get more expensive so should the length of the warranty.
Retailers would register the warranty at the purchasing point, warranty would also need to be transferable, second hand, third hand, no just who has the item at the time can claim or check the warranty on the goods. Would goods get more expensive? Yes, would they last longer?
Maybe if the cost of return made it to expensive? Would they improve the quality? So good could have a quality rating, the high the rate the better the warranty, quality, durability and material savings. Another scheme, Quality star rating! As the price increase so should the quality and warranty, so goes the rating. Would you buy a product with a low rating?
You brought a TV five years ago, instead of it dying you sell it on e-bay and it goes to another person for another five year still under warranty, your air conditioning last 25 year, and as parts failed they were updated and replaced with better more efficient part.
